Difference between Double and Single opt-in lists
By Viku Rawat
Email marketing-double optin and single optin list The double optin is used by third party auto-responders in contradiction to the single optin list. The difference between the two is just the verification email. Users to a web page might leave their names or email address on it. Then the auto-responder script sends an email to the visitors email address. In single optin, the email might be a thank you message offering a link to some other information or convince the visitor to subscribe. Even if the visitor does not subscribe, he is already on the list which contains not only the visitors IP address, date and time of visit but also voluntarily left their email addresses thereby approving to receive emails from the website. On the other hand, in double optin the email sent by the website requires verification by clicking on the relevant link. The benefit of the confirmatory link not only obviates the errors in the list induced by wrong email addresses or errors in typing or filling in the email addresses of another person who did not even visit the website. In other words, the benefits of double optin are that the list is completely error proof as confirmed by the users clicking upon the verification link. Thus in theory at least, double optin seems to score upon the single optin in the minds of email marketers by a wide margin. However in practice, the so called benefits of double optin are highly touted while in actual practice it is not so. This is because in at least one third cases, the user fails to verify by clicking upon the confirmatory link. In other cases, slow internet fails to dispatch the verification email to the website in question. On the other hand, the verification email arrives in spam folder of the email address then it not only goes un-noticed but also gets automatically deleted after elapse of the requisite time. |
